Our TRIS-NPG samples are now at the ISS!!
Since years we are waiting for this moment to come. On, February 20. 2021, at 18:36 European winter time, an Antares Rocket has launched the NG-15 Mission, which brought samples produced at the laboratory of the chair to the International Space Station (ISS). According to schedule the experiments on the ISS will start mid March.
Since a couple of years we are doing experiments with transparent metal-like solidifying materials, namely alloys of TRIS-NPG. This alloy system reveals a peritectic reaction and thus can serve as model material for understanding peritectic solidification of steel, Fe-Ni, Cu-Sn, Sn-Cd or other metallic peritectic alloys. Suitable model materials were alloyed under an protecting atmosphere and filled in special ESA-syringes as shown in the picture beside. Of course, the whole filling must happen at a well defined temperature, ensured by the shown furnace.
At ESA's control center, E-USOG, in Madrid/Spain, a twin model of the "Transparent Alloy Facility" that will be used to operate our samples on the International Space Station exists. Dr. Mogeritsch, senior scientist at the chair, did the aparatus inspection together with the chair holder Univ. Prof. Dr. Ludwig in 2019. In the Corona year 2020, many remote trials with this twin unit were done all the way from Leoben. In the meantime, the "Transparent Alloy Facility" is in place in the scientific glove box rack at the ISS, waiting to get our cartridges filled with TRIS-NPG by monday morning.
The scientifically importence with peritectic alloys is the fact that at low solidification speed the two solid phases, alpha and beta, grow coupled like an eutectic. However, this unexpected couple growth seems not to be stable such that oscillary growth modes occur. However, natural convection on earth always acts and destroy the clear growth conditions. With a better understanding of the underlying phenomena the production of peritectic alloys with specific properties will be possible, even on earth.
Chair of Simulation and Modeling Metallurgical Processes
As part of the
Metallurgy Department of the
Montanuniversitaet Leoben, the chair is working on different projects concerning numerical modeling of metallurgical processes, such as
Continuous Casting of
Electro-Slag-Remelting etc.. In addition, we are doing basic research on the interaction between turbulence and solidification, flow through dendritic mushy zones and coupled and/or oscillatory growth of peritectics. The last topic will lead to an experiment on the
International Space Station (ISS) in 2020.
Beside our research activities we are giving different lectures and exercises on fundamentals of numerical modeling, application of simulation in steel and non-ferrous metal production as well as foundary technology.
